The Most Affordable Folding Phone Ever from Huawei

At a recent launch event in China, Huawei unveiled a scaled-down version of its clamshell foldable. The P50 Pocket from last year's release has the same footprint as the Huawei Pocket S, which has upgraded cameras and a CPU. The Pocket S's design and display are identical to those of the P50 Pocket. The primary display is a 6.9-inch OLED panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz, a resolution of 1080p, and a touch sampling rate of 300Hz. It supports 1440 Hz PWM and up to 1 billion colors.

The secondary screen on the outside is a distinctive circular display measuring 1.04 inches with a resolution of 340 by 340 pixels and a pixel density of 328. Notifications, the time and date, and other things can be displayed using it.

Hardware and software

This device includes an upper mid-range Snapdragon 778G CPU with 128 GB/265 GB/512 GB storage options and just one 8GB RAM configuration in place of last year's top SoC, the Snapdragon 888. Even a memory card slot for expansion is there, although it only supports Huawei's own nano memory cards.

Software-wise, it runs Harmony OS 3.0 in China but will have EMUI 12 when sold outside.

Cameras

It loses the additional 32MP wide-angle shooter but retains the same 40MP main camera and 13MP ultrawide sensor as the original model. Instead, it receives a dedicated laser AF module. Both 4K 60 FPS films and 1080p slow motion footage can be captured.

The 10.7MP selfie camera hasn't changed either.

Pricing and Battery

There is no wireless charging available for the 4,000 mAh battery, but it does allow 40W wired charging and 5W reverse charging.

The Huawei Pocket S, which starts at $820 in China, is now the most affordable foldable phone available, but its price will probably increase when it hits other markets. It will come in five different colors, including Black, Gold Yellow, Rose Pink, Ice Crystal Blue, and Mint Green.
