This Xiaomi Phone Supports the Use of Expert Camera Lenses
Xiaomi is adding a dramatic twist to the never-ending argument between smartphones and digital cameras. What if smartphones had access to full-frame lenses from high-end cameras? With its new concept phone, Xiaomi specifically seeks to address this. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept Edition, which uses an attachable Leica camera lens for improved photography, was recently teased by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer. This idea phone will have the ability to mount a full-sized Leica camera lens on top of its main camera module, as the image depicts. The lens appears to be going over the silver ring that surrounds the primary camera. Instead, the standard Xiaomi 12S Ultra sports a golden ring that is just decorative.
Ice Universe, a well-known tipper, released a photo of it being used to demonstrate what it will be like in real life. It's important to note that the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is already a premium smartphone with a focus on photography. Therefore, if it is successful in fusing its powers with a full-sized professional lens, we could be in for a revolutionary improvement in smartphone image quality.
Additionally, Xiaomi will be the first company to provide a whole Leica camera lens on top of a smartphone thanks to this. According to the Chinese company, this concept phone intends to provide both a flagship phone experience and a tool for professional photography.

Although Lei Jun, the CEO of the firm, has revealed some hints about the impending Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept, the finer specifications of this camera configuration are yet unknown. According to him, the gadget would include two 1-inch camera sensors, one similar to those present on typical smartphones and the other located in the centre of the module and working in tandem with an external Leica lens.
There will also be an ultra-wide camera in the module, but no zoom lens. The Leica external lens may also offer zoom capabilities.
As the teaser campaign progresses, we anticipate learning more specifics.
There are certain shortcomings in the practicality department, even though the interchangeable lens idea is advantageous, especially if you want the advantages of premium glass and the mobility of a smartphone. For instance, having a physical lens on the left side of the phone, as shown in the figure above, makes handling the device unbalanced. Traditional lenses are positioned in the middle of cameras or counterbalanced with a grip area for ergonomic reasons.
When an external lens is not being used, you'll also need some kind of cover to shield the smartphone's sensor from dust particles and, worst still, scratches. The teaser clip suggests that the sapphire glass layering on the 12S Ultra fixes this problem. It is unclear if this has an impact on image sharpness and how light is caught. The smartphone business is not new to the addition of an external lens. Sony's DSC-QX10/B 4.45-44.5mm lens can hook onto a phone for greater zooming, and companies like Moment have established their brands around phone cases with detachable lenses. Samsung's Galaxy Camera transformed the device's back into a full-fledged camera.
