Future Samsung flagships will feature overclocked GPUs

Several forthcoming smartphones have already been benchmarked by Geekbench using Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, including the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra from Samsung. When they did, the benchmark recorded 3.36GHz prime cores, 2.80GHz performance cores, and 2.02GHz efficiency cores for the three clusters.

Other than the Samsung flagships, several other phones will feature the 8 Gen 2 chipset. The iQOO 11 and Vivo X90 Pro, for instance, have been benchmarked. Looking more closely, those phones' main cores actually operate at a 3.19GHz frequency. 3.1872GHz is the precise frequency that Qualcomm lists. Why then do the Samsung's operate more quickly?

Additionally, according to Ice Universe, the European model will use a "special high-frequency Snapdragon 8 Gen 2." Since the benchmarks we've seen thus far are based on US models, this is likely a global issue rather than a European one. Leakster asserts that the primary CPU core will run at 3.36GHz rather than 3.2GHz. The GPU will run at 719MHz instead of 680MHz.

Additionally, Qualcomm has released "AC" variations that have faster clock rates than the standard chip. For instance, the Snapdragon 855's model number is SM8150, whereas the 855+'s is SM8150-AC, which raises the speed of the prime core from 2.84GHz to 2.96GHz.

This should be the SM8550-AC since the SM8550-AB for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 was released this week. It's uncertain if the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 moniker would apply to this processor, which will power the Galaxy S23 series. It seems, nevertheless, that Qualcomm and TSMC have found just enough room for a respectable overclock.

In addition, Qualcomm's 8 Gen 2 CPU and GPU are both 35% faster than those of the 8 Gen 1 processor. After being overclocked, this new chip should operate more quickly. But it's too soon to tell how much faster from benchmarks.
