Apple Unveils Its First-Ever Augmented Reality Headset As a "Spatial Computer"

Apple finally debuted the Vision Pro, its first-ever VR/AR headset, after much anticipation. Apple prefers to refer to it as the first "spatial computer," positioning it as more than simply a normal VR headset. VisionOS, a brand-new operating system created especially for the Vision Pro, runs this gadget.

The headset's "display system" is one of its unique features. Each of the two micro OLED panels, which Apple proudly claims are included, is about the size of a postage stamp. The resolution of a 4K TV for each eye is exceeded by the astounding 23 million pixels offered by these panels collectively.

A dual-core version of the M2 chipset with special customization powers the Vision Pro. Additionally, it has the R1 chip, which is in charge of handling data from a variety of 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones. In just 12 milliseconds—eight times faster than the blink of an eye—the R1 chip transmits fresh images to the panels.

The Vision Pro has a battery life of up to two hours and may be constantly used throughout the day when connected to a power source. It can also be powered by an external, "high-performance" bespoke portable battery pack.

Your hands, eyes, and voice may all be used to easily operate the visionOS user interface. There are no physical controls at all; you may navigate through apps by merely using your sight, touching your fingers to make selections, flicking your wrist to scroll, or even speaking commands.

The Vision Pro's EyeSight feature makes interactions with those around you more transparent. When you are wearing the headset, anyone approaching you can see a clear picture of your eyes, and you can also see them.

Additionally, EyeSight gives visual clues to others indicating that you are currently engrossed or "busy" while fully immersed in a setting or actively using an app.

FaceTime calls display each caller as a life-size tile, just as regular phone calls. The experience is made more immersive by the spatial audio feature, which makes sure that everyone's voice appears to come from their positions in your field of vision.

Wearing the Vision Pro allows users to transform into a "Persona" during these calls—a digital version of oneself created by Apple using cutting-edge machine learning techniques. These Personas replicate in-person hand and facial gestures, further enhancing the naturalness of your interactions.

You may easily adjust your level of presence and immersion by using the headset's Digital Crown. The Vision Pro also has Apple's first-ever 3D camera, allowing you to record, relive, and totally immerse yourself in your priceless memories while having Spatial Audio added to the experience.

Early in 2024, the much anticipated Apple Vision Pro is scheduled to go on sale in the United States for $3,499. Apple intends to gradually roll out the Vision Pro to more nations in 2024 after its first availability.
